Nurse Norma - Bartonsville

I Believe Nursing is more than a career to me; I think of it as a superhero calling and beyond. When I was a young girl I had a traumatic experience that involved having the Emergency Medical Service called to my house to save my Fathers life. This team of amazing people were my Superheroes! In this most terrifying moment of my life they made everything possible and ok, without them I might not have my father still today. This awful experience ignited the desire in me to be like them. Be the person that makes a positive difference in people’s lives during their most vulnerable moments. The compassion, empathy, support and healing my family received from start to full recovery from medical personnel is what made me want to be a nurse. It’s what drives me everyday to provide exceptional care to my patients. I know first hand the profound feeling it has to be on the receiving end. Every interaction with my patients offers a chance for me to be that Superhero; whether through a gentle touch, a kind word, doing treatments, administering medication, offering a listening ear, simply holding a hand, or offering a supportive smile. Nursing means most importantly showing up! Nurses wear many hats far beyond just bedside care. Nurses are trusted advocates, a reassuring presence in the moments of pain, fear and uncertainty. Nurses make all the difference in a patient’s journey towards recovery because we empower our patients to participate in their own care and ensure they receive the care and support they deserve. I have been a nurse for 20 plus years now and believe some days can be very challenging to say the least! Learning never stops and the dedication can be overwhelming for those that don’t understand. These are the days when I stop and remember why I became a nurse in the first place! To make that special difference in a person’s life. Even though, nursing is a very demanding profession, it is also a very rewarding job that embodies a pure and profound expressions of humanity. It celebrates the dignity and worth of every individual. It’s not always easy, it takes a selfless strong and compassionate spirit to provide healing, comfort, and hope. Nurses change and save lives daily like a Superhero and it reminds me to be grateful for all my blessings. It gives me purpose and fulfillment to provide to others in need. I’m forever grateful and thankful to serve others and be that significant difference in peoples lives daily. I only hope that in all my years of service I have been that superhero for someone else like those medical professionals were for me and my family as a young girl. This is what being a nurse means to me!

Nurse Beverly and Thomas

FIRST A LITTLE ABOUT MYSELF. I BEGAN MY NURSING CAREER 28YRS AGO. I’VE WORKED AS A FLOOR NURSE ON THE CARDIAC FLOOR AT THE HOSPITAL, AS A UTILIZATION REVIEW NURSE, A WOUND CARE NURSE AT A WOUND CARE CENTER AND WAS PART OF A CHF TELEHEALTH PROGRAM AND A CASE MANAGER IN THE FIELD. I WAS ALSO BRIEFLY A CLINICAL SUPERVISOR AT DOCTOR'S CHOICE, NOW AVEANNA, WHEN I LEARNED I MOSTLY ENJOY HANDS ON WORKING DIRECTLY WITH PATIENT'S. I ENJOY CASE MANAGING PATIENTS, TEACHING AND WATCHING THEM IMPROVE. DOCTOR'S CHOICE/AVEANNA IS A GREAT COMPANY WITH HAVING A GREAT ADMINISTRATOR, TRACEY. SHE SHOWS THAT SHE CARES AND TREATS EVERYONE WITH KINDNESS AND THE RESPECT WE ALL DESERVE. MY PATIENTS AND CO-WORKERS ARE LIKE FAMILY TO ME. I LIVE ON 10 ACRES WHICH IS A VERY PEACEFUL TRANSITION FROM THE CITY I MOVED FROM. I ENJOY SPENDING TIME WITH MY GERMAN SHEPHERD, PHAROAH, HORSEBACK RIDING WHEN I CAN, TRIPS TO THE COLORADO MOUNTAINS AND SPENDING TIME WITH MY SON, SHERIDAN, EVERY CHANCE I GET. NOW I WANT TO TELL YOU ABOUT A VERY SPECIAL ELDERLY MALE V.A. PATIENT THAT I CASE MANAGE. THE OFFICE TOLD ME THERE WAS THIS PATIENT WHOM THE OTHER NURSES COULD NEVER CATCH AT HOME WITH MULTIPLE CALLS AND DRIVEBYS. I TOLD THEM I WOULD TRY TO FIND HIM. PART OF THE REASON HE WAS NEVER HOME, WAS THAT HE WAS AT THE V.A. E.R. LITERALLY EVERY DAY WITH MEDICATION QUESTIONS/PROBLEMS AND ASKING THEM TO FILL HIS PILL BOX AS WELL AS FREQ COPD EXAC. HIS SON AND EX WIFE BOTH PASSED AWAY WITHIN A MONTH OF EACH OTHER FROM COVID. HIS CURRENT WIFE HAS BEEN IN A NURSING HOME FOR MANY YEARS AFTER SUFFERING A STROKE AT A YOUNG AGE. HIS DAUGHTER LIVES IN TAMPA AND THE PATIENT IS NOT WILLING TO RELOCATE OR GO INTO AN ALF SO HE HAS NO AVAILABLE C/G. AFTER SERVING IN THE MILITARY, HE WORKED AS A NEW YORK CITY POLICE OFFICER THEN BACK HERE AS A BUS DRIVER. ONCE RETIRED HE VOLUNTEERED AT THE V.A. AND WOULD DRIVE UP EVERY DAY ON HIS HARLEY MOTORCYCLE. EVERYONE AT THE V.A. KNOWS HIM VERY WELL AND ONE E.R. NURSE TOLD ME HOW SAD IT WAS, IN SUCH A SHORT TIME, TO SEE HIM GO FROM DRIVING HIS HARLEY TO HOW HE IS TODAY. HE NOW GETS AROUND ON A SCOOTER. HE WAS MISSING ALL OF HIS DR. APPT'S ALSO BECAUSE HE IS FORGETFUL. I STARTED FILLING HIS PILL BOX WEEKLY, I CALL THE PHARMACY TO ORDER HIS REFILLS WHICH THEY MAIL OUT TO HIM, I CALL HIM AND PLACE REMINDER NOTES FOR HIS DOCTOR'S APPTS ETC. AT FIRST, HE WOULD MISS SOME OF HIS DOSES BUT AS IT BECAME ROUTINE FOR HIM, HE BECAME TOTALLY COMPLIANT WITH HIS MEDICATION REGIMEN. HE WAS ALSO, INITIALLY, GETTING FREQ UTI'S AS HE STRAIGHT CATHS HIMSELF SINCE HAVING RADIATION TX FOR PROSTATE CA. I SPENT THE TIME NEEDED TO INSTRUCT HIM ON MANAGING HIS CATHETER AND HE HASNT HAD ANOTHER UTI SINCE HE STARTED THIS. I BELIEVE THAT HE GETS SCARED WHEN HE BECOMES MORE SOB, THAN USUAL, DESPITE THE NEBULIZER TX BECAUSE HE LIVES ALONE AND THAT IS WHY HE ALSO MADE MANY TRIPS TO THE E.R. I THINK IT MAKES HIM FEEL BETTER KNOWING HE CAN CALL ME ANYTIME AND THAT ILL BE THERE FOR HIM. HE DOESNT FEEL AS ISOLATED AND ALONE. IM NOT SURE IF IT IS HIM OR MYSELF THAT BENEFITS THE MOST OUT OF MY VISITS. HE IS TRULY A BLESSING AND INSPIRATION TO ME. HOME CARE NURSING IS DEFINATELY MY CALLING. A BAD DAY IN HOME CARE IS FAR BETTER THAN A GREAT DAY IN A FACILITY. I WANT TO WISH ALL MY FELLOW NURSES AN AWESOME NURSES WEEK! ❤️

Nurse Mary and David

Hi, My name is Mary and I am a Licensed Practical Nurse. I started working at Aveanna June 2011, David was about 2 years old at the time. He is now a teenager, David and I have grown up together. He is a very kind young man. David has inspired me to be kind to others who are not very nice. I am a hard worker who does everything she can to encourage him to be a better person, to get an education and go to college. I tell him that even though he has challenges, that there are lots of career choices that he can make. When David was younger it seemed as though his medical issues were insurmountable, he has had major surgery and other medical issues that he has overcome. That is why I said that he and I have grown together. I am very proud to have the chance to work with him every night.
